Because we want more whittlin’ in Pack 618 (but not more cuts!) we want to let everyone know about our Pack’s Whittlin’ Rules.
Who Can Whittle?
Not every scout has the skill and maturity to whittle safely. In Pack 618, a scout must be in a bear or Webelos den (grades 3-5) in order to earn and use his Whittlin’ Chip for whittling on Pack campouts. Tigers and Wolves should not bring knives to Pack events (even if they’ve earned their Whittlin’ Chip during another scouting function).
We realize some younger scouts (as well as their brothers and sisters) are probably mature enough to whittle responsibly, but in order to coordinate supervision at Pack-sponsored events, we ask that only qualified cub scouts practice whittling. This will help protect the whittling privilege for the future.
When Can We Whittle?
Whittlin’ is fun, but not always appropriate. Pack campouts are the best time for whittlin’. Parents and den leaders can use their best judgment when choosing other times.
Here are a few other rules to help leaders monitor our whittlin’:
Scouts must be in their class-A uniform. We believe this will help scouts recognize that this activity requires special behavior.
Scouts must have their Whittlin’ Chip with them.
If a scout is not whittlin’ safely, a leader may ask for his Whittlin’ Chip and tear off one or more corners (depending on the severity of the safety violation). Once all four corners are gone, the scout will need to re-qualify for the Whittlin’ Chip.
Thanks for supporting whittlin’ safety!
